IRRATIONAL ATITUDES

The building of rational Roadblocks

 

Experience has shown that many of the performance problems athletes struggle with actually originate directly from illogical and irrational attitudes.

We often find that negative attitudes stem directly from irrational ones.

Once an irrational attitude takes root, the athlete is destined for trouble.

The most disruptive irrational attitudes most commonly experienced by performing athletes fall into 3 general categories:

  1. Attitudes toward mistakes
  2. Attitudes toward control
  3. Attitudes toward winning

 

IRATIONAL ATTITUDES TOWARDS MISTAKES:

  • Mistakes cannot be tolerated. If I am really tough, I will never make mistakes
  • If I punish myself for making mistakes, it will prevent me from making them again
  • If I do not get upset with myself, I’ll just keep right on making inexcusable mistakes.
  • Winners don’t make mistakes
  • To be a winner one must be perfectly competent and adequate.

 

PROPER ATTITUDES TOWARDS MISTAKES:

  • I understand that mistakes are a necessary part of learning anything well. No mistakes, no learning.
  • Mistakes, simply represent feedback. If I become upset, I cannot listen or adjust – I am bound to repeat.
  • Patience and persistence produce positive performance.

 

IRRATIONAL ATITUDES TOWARD CONTROL:

  • Winners never choke under pressure
  • Choking is a sign of weakness and cannot be tolerated
  • Most things are caused by events and happening outside myself
  • More than anything else, luck or fate will likely determine my future in sports
  • My opponents seem to get all the breaks – all the good luck
  • When things go bad, I have a little control over them

As you no doubt know by now, Self-Control is the key to success in sport. Without self-control, you become a pawn of fate and circumstances.

 

PROPER ATTITUDES TOWARDS CONTROL:

  • The finest athlete in the world, in any sport, on occasion, choke. We can develop substantial control over it, but we are never immune
  • Choking is a sign that I am out there, playing, taking a risk. That’s the only way I will ever learn to control it.
  • The more I fear choking, the more likely it is that I will experience it
  • What I do and become in sport is the result of me. My future is in my own hands.
  • Luck or fate rarely determines the outcome. I make my own breaks. Good luck – bad luck – it’s mostly a state of mind. If I think I’ll be lucky, I usually am.

 

IRATIONAL ATTITUDES TOWARDS WINNING:

  • Winning is the only acceptable goal
  • I am worthwhile and have value only if I win
  • I am strong if I win, and weak if I lose
  • To win is good. To loose is bad
  • Winning is everything

 

An obsession with winning is clearly self-defeating. Even for the professional, this obsession is crippling. Winning is, in fact, everything in professional sports, but the successful athlete has learned all too well that a preoccupation with winning results in poor performance.

PROPER ATTITUDES TOWARDS WINNING:

  • Winning is a goal, not THE Goal
  • My focus is always on doing the best I can, not winning
  • Winning the contest with myself supercedes all other goals
  • I strive to outperform myself not my competitor
  • I have value as a person, independent of the outcome.

 

OTHER 4 COMMON FAULTY ATTITUDES:

–         Hard work cannot be fun

–         When things don’t go as I planned, it’s a catastrophe!

–         My opponents should be as fair and nice as I am

–         Most of my opponents will cheat me if they get the chance.

 

ASSIGMENTS:

  1. Please identify and write down which of your beliefs and attitudes are truly irrational and interfering
  2. Explain how illogical these attitudes are. Trace how they lead directly to performance problems.
  3. Please replace the irrational attitudes with more realistic, flexible and effective ones. Furthermore, reason, suggest, persuade, control and visualize until what is irrational is now rational.
  4. Please write down the proper attitudes that should replace the “Other 4 common faulty attitudes” listed right above the assignments.
